This hard work and attention to detail created a very informative and memorable play. The authors choose to present this story in play format so that the characters words and actions could be effectively expressed. This format also allowed the story to be conveyed without any bias to either side. It is in this wa y that the authors allow each side of the case to speak their minds freely. The main source for Lee and Lawrences information was the actual trial record found in Dayton, Tennessee, dating back to 1925. They did not use all of the characters or dialogue from the records, instead they elaborated on the actual people and events, also using reporters stories on the case. The authors placed intriguing characters within the play to make the storys events unfold more readily and the become more interesting. The book shows the reader how closed minded that these characters can be when it comes to a new, different idea. This is a valuable book because it teaches its readers to respect the thoughts and beliefs of others, even though they may oppose them. In the beginning of the play, the authors try to lead us into the topic of Darwinism versus Creationism. One instance was when the character Howard actually told Melinda Your old mans a monkey! The audience also learns that the accused lawbreaker, Bert Cates, and the reverends daughter, Rachel Brown, are in love and are set to be married. Rachel becomes a pertinent part of the trial when Brady starts to question her, against the will of Bert. Brady later shatters Rachels trust in him by putting words in her mouth and trying to make her sound as if she is turning against Bert. Rachel is extremely upset over this happenstance and blames herself for the guilty verdict that is later placed upon her fiancee. The trial takes a great toll on Brady, eventually leading to his death at the end of the play. Drummonds playful, yet intelligent interrogation of Brady took a rapid turn, going from Brady strutting about the Bible to demoralizing Mr. Brady himself. After ruling for an untold number of years Dasaratha decides it is time to relinquish his throne to Rama, his oldest son. He notifies his assembly of this decision, and describes the qualities his son possesses; He is perfect and will be a perfect ruler. He has compassion, a sense of justice and courage, and he makes no distinctions between human beings- old or young, prince or peasant; he has the same consideration for everyone. In courage, valor, and all the qualities—none equal to him. He will be your best protector from any hostile force, be it human, subhuman or superhman†¦I hope I shall have your support in anointing him immediately as Emperor of Kosala. † (Narayan 1972, 34) Fittingly, following this speech the assembly let out a ‘joyous shout’ and a spokesman tells Dasaratha they have been long waiting for this moment. The quote above could be applied to a father and his children as readily as a king to his people; interestingly enough the great general Sun Tzu promoted treating his own soldiers as his beloved sons to instill loyalty. Undoubtedly the true measure of a great leader is inspiring loyalty over fealty, and the Ramayana highlights this again when Dasaratha speaks directly to Rama prior to taking over; â€Å"You will have to pursue a policy of absolute justice under all circumstances. There can be no place in a king’s heart for lust, anger, or meanness. † (Narayan 1972, 35) It is telling that in Thailand over the past two centuries nine kings have called themselves Rama; in honor of a fictional character no less! The Ramayana offers an idyllic view of a near perfect time and place, where all peoples knew their positions in society and acted in accordance with dharma. The fantastic characters offer the very best and very worst in human nature, magnified by godlike powers and abilities to prove their extraordinary character as ethical (or unethical) beings. It does not constitute a leap of logic to see how Rama evolved into a divine being over the centuries, from mythological character to a worshipped avatar of Vishnu. Regardless, this story has withstood the test of time and remains an important part of literature for great masses of people in Asia.
